Dressed up in the City of Lights

For some time now I have been taking a backseat to blogging. At first it was due to some technical difficulties (ie. phone being stolen, hard drive crashing, ect...) but now I am just being lazy I guess!
The last week of OCtober Giovanni had a big International participants meeting up in Como for EXPO and I decided since he was going to be gone most of the week to head to Paris to visit with our friends! We had a GREAT time! Giovanni joined us for a long weekend and we packed in much fun along with lounge time! Here are a few photos of Halloween. I will post more about the rest of the trip at a later time.

We celebrated Halloween by attending the American Library in Paris activities, including Charlie Brown's Halloween and trick' o treating through out the library.
As you can see we had 2 insects! A Yellow Butteryfly and a Spider that LOVES to crawl!

A view from a new window

Here is the view from Giovanni's new office window, Milans' first skyscraper at 30 floors (he is on the 30th floor nicknamed the celestial floor). Situated in front of the central station all of Milan can be seen from here, on a nice day even the alps!

Where would we go?

Monday night during our family time we were talking about Elder Dieter F Uctdorf, one of our church leaders who grew up in Europe in the after effects of WW2. We were talking about how they had to leave their home. I asked Lottie
What we would do if we had to leave our home, her reply was so simple: "we go to Utah mom!" we laughed, but she was serious! How I love how she solves problems!

Sickies

Poor Charlotte has been fighting a fever since Friday. She has no other symptoms, but her fever keeps spiking into triple digits. Yesterday we ran a few errands when she was feeling a little better, but wanted to take along brother Isaac's blankie (I was calling her Linus). Hopefully by tomorrow she is better.
P.S. What do think of Gio's new haircut?

Model in the making

Yesterday our little Charlotte modeled in a fashion show held at her friend's preschool. She was darling!
I was only backstage so I did not get proper photos of her coming down the runway, but I do have a few of her running around behind the scenes (too bad my computer died and it may be a while until I can get them on here)!
I really wish I had a video of Gio teaching her how to "strut", yes strut ostrich style while blowing kisses- I was a bit disappointed she did not do it down runway, maybe next time!
Here's to a lovely little Charlotte!

America is blessed!

Look who is one of the newest citizens!!! Ok, really until we get Isaac's paper work back will everything be "official" but just look at that smile! He loves that he now can claim his American heritage! We love this little guy!

Thirsty??

This is the drinking fountain near one of our favorite parks, Char's loves trying to get a drink between running around. She was lucky to have daddy there this day to help!

the past 2 weekends

I have been holding out you! Rude of me right? We have been doing a tiny bit of traveling around here and I have not shared any of it with you. Don't hold it against me, I have been lazy and not in the "sharing mood".Please understand, I am sure most all of us go through that from time to time!
I came to my good senses and figured who ever you are that checks up on us here probably wants to see what happenings are going on around here and how the kiddies are growing. I hope not to disappoint!
This last weekend we were in Como to see our friends Ilaria & Alessandro get married! The ceremony was held in a beautiful church decorated with white flowers and candles, perfect! The reception was in a villa off of Lake Como just past Belliago. The kids were a bit under the weather and spent most of the time sleeping... so don't mind the "glazed eye" look they are givin!

(first 3 images were taken by our friend Marco, he has a MUCH better camera then I do, Sorry! this is the biggest I could get them!)

The weekend before that we went to Torino! It was a QUICK trip, but fun to be back! Giovanni and I met 6 years ago Sunday, June 5th, 2005 in Torino & we just happened to be there again on SUnday, June 5th, 2011!!!
Here are a few highlights of that little get away! (P.S.) our friend Cary came with us) After a quick trip to Porto Palazzo (Europe's largest open air market) buying plump, juicy cherries and some yummy asparagus for a STEAL we then walked around the center.
One place I had always heard about but had never visited in my many trips to Torino was a little cafe called La Biscern. Supposedly they have some phenomenal hot chocolate (among some other drinks of which we did not try due to the alcoholic ingredients). This place is truly storic! When we first walked into the square where it is located we saw a few tables outside with people enjoying their drinks... and a line of about 10 people waiting to sit! It was quite tiny inside, maybe 10 little tables crammed with chairs around them green walls lined with silver cups and teapots. Glass jars filled with candy and yummy gianduia chocolates(a hazelnut chocolate, think nutella flavor)! Most people popping in to try a glass of something and leaving again quickly. We were among this group. You can see Charlotte enjoyed it!

There are more adventure to share, but I am too tired right now... until hummm, i dont know, soon!

Butt Heads!

Yesterday Charlotte picked up a crayon told me it was blue and then continued to put it between her fingers as if she had a cigarette! She laughed and blew out a mouth full of air! Only 2 years old and already she thinks that it's cool to smoke! Horrible! I know that living in Italy there are many people who smoke, but I guess I was a bit native to the influence on my little ones! A few hours after this incident we were at the park and I was following Char's around with Isaac in the stroller. I watch a woman light up right next to me! No wonder, kids really absorb everything! They observe and try to do things the see us do! I better watch my actions because I know that what I say and do will be mimicked by little Lottie!

Italian Bureaucracy

While reading Rick Steve's blog on his website today I laughed out loud about his previous entries on Italian bureaucracy! Although I don't request for film permits or anything of the sort that he is doing... it seems that EVERYONE in Italy in most any sector works like this! If you want to know one of the reasons I tell people I have a "LOve/Hate relationship with this country I live in go and read this! I usually have to remind others that I am not on vacation, I live here. I do agree that Italy is beautiful and has much to offer anyone to come and explore her borders but my life is not like the movies (oh how I wish it were!)! Go and read the link below for an idea of what I am talking about!
Italian Bureaucracy

I realized that well over one month ago was the last time I posted. I am on blogger nearly everyday... just felt a bit overwhelmed by the business of everyday and not having much motivation to post anything. Gio has asked me a few times if I have updated the blog and I reminded him that he also has access if he feels so inclined to jot a few things down. Maybe in the future he will become more of a regular!
Isaac is growing, growing, growing! He has the sweetest smile! No matter what is going on or how tired I am when he smiles the whole world is at peace!

Charlotte is potty training, and doing pretty good at it. She loves to add a sticker to her chart every time she makes it to the potty!
The days come and go and most days my house looks worse when I lay down then it did when I got up. I guess this is part of being a Mom. The heat is killing any motivation that I had to clean and organize, but we did retrieve our two fans that were being stored at the neighbors house, Thank goodness we have some relief now! I honestly don't know how I will ever survive the summer here in Milan! It is only May and I can barely handle the hot sticky weather!

In season

Here in Milan the weather has been high 70's- 80's, beautiful sun has been kissing us and a light cool breeze brushing our skin. Spring is in the air and life is all around!
Each time I go into a store or walk through a market there are ample choices of strawberries and artichokes all for such a great price I have a HARD time passing them up! I just run into one problem: how to prepare them each time??
Sure, I loved a steamed artichoke with garlic butter, I love to stuff them and cut them up and cook them in pasta and risotto... but sometimes you need some one like Martha to give you a few variations.
Here is a really YUMMY risotto that I have made twice in the past week!
Ingredients
(photo via Martha Stewart, I am a bit too busy to remember to take pictures)
2 lemons
10 baby artichokes
6 cups homemade chicken stock or 3 cups low-sodium store-bought chicken stock mixed with 3 cups water
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
1 garlic clove, minced
Coarse salt
2 cups short-grain Italian rice, such as Arborio, Carnaroli, or Vialone Nano
1 cup dry white wine
2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh thyme, plus sprigs for garnish
Freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup mascarpone (*I used cream cheese and it was heavenly)

Directions

Remove 3 teaspoons grated zest from 1 lemon; halve the lemon, and squeeze out 1 tablespoon juice. Set zest and juice aside. Cut remaining lemon in half, and squeeze into a medium bowl of cold water; add all rinds to water.

Prepare the artichokes: Working with 1 artichoke at a time, snap off tough outer leaves until pale-green leaves are exposed. Cut off top third. Using a paring knife, peel dark-green layer from base and stem; trim stem. Quarter artichoke lengthwise. Transfer to lemon water. (*I cut up the artichokes into small bite size pieces)

Bring stock and bay leaf to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat; reduce heat to low.

Melt butter with oil in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is slightly softened, about 6 minutes. Drain artichokes, and add to pan. Cook, stirring often, until artichokes are just tender, about 12 minutes. Add rice, and stir until coated, about 1 minute. Pour in wine, and cook, stirring, until wine has almost evaporated, about 3 minutes.

Add enough hot stock (about 1 cup) to just cover rice. Cook, stirring, until stock is almost absorbed. Continue adding stock, 3/4 cup at a time, waiting for each addition to be absorbed before adding the next; cook, stirring, until rice is tender but still slightly firm in the center, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from heat, and discard bay leaf.

Stir in chopped thyme; season with salt and pepper. Add mascarpone (or creamcheese), 2 teaspoons lemon zest, and the lemon juice; stir until mascarpone is melted and rice is moist and creamy. Serve immediately, garnished with thyme sprigs and remaining teaspoon lemon zest.

Moving onto the strawberries!!!
I love the simplicity of hulled and sliced strawberries with a bit of sugar and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice, I occasionally add a bit of fresh cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Sometimes I even drizzle some melted chocolate on top! However, when I saw this recipe I knew it would be a great one to try! I was not disappointed!

(photo via Martha Stewart)
Ingredients

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, plus more for pie plate
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 pound strawberries, hulled and halved

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 10-inch pie plate. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together into a medium bowl.

Put butter and 1 cup sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Reduce speed to medium-low; mix in egg, milk, and vanilla.

Reduce speed to low; gradually mix in flour mixture. Transfer batter to buttered pie plate. Arrange strawberries on top of batter, cut sides down and as close together as possible. Sprinkle remaining 2 tablespoons sugar over berries.

Bake cake 10 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees. Bake until cake is golden brown and firm to the touch, about 1 hour. Let cool in pie plate on a wire rack. Cut into wedges. Cake can be stored at room temperature, loosely covered, up to 2 days.

What have you been enjoying these days??

No more weekends in the fiat

Bad news, our fiat weekend (name of the car) has died! Funeral arrangements are being made. There are so many problems with the car it would cost more to fix then what it's worth. Not to mention the fact that 2 months ago we put nearly 900euro into it!!!
For the time being we will rely on public transport and our feet. Thank goodness we live in the city and fairly close to almost everything.
Below is a picture of char's next a tiny car we saw on the street just hours before the bad news.

you may have seen me

Over the weekend our church held conference, this happens two times a year. The living prophet and apostles speak and give counsel during 4 sessions held Saturday and Sunday. There were quite a few talks that I really enjoyed listening to, which I will share with you later. While watching the Sunday morning session there was a talk given by Sister Allred. I was surprised to see a quick video clip that had me in it. I filmed it about 5 years ago and pretty much forgot all about it... until Sunday.
Here is a still of the quick little clip.
Kinda fun to know I have been around the world!

Picture

Today Charlotte sat next to Isaac and asked me to take her picture, too bad she was not looking at me in any of them!
Isaac is 1 month old now. Time is flying by!
Last week he had another ultrasound to follow up on the cysts. Seems that they are a bit smaller, however we also learned that cysts are not connected to anything, they are just there- floating. This means they also can change form. The surgeon does not want to do anything at this point, for which I am glad. We go in again mid May for another ultrasound and follow up visit. For the time being we are happy that our little man is doing well!

Isaac's Birth story

Isaac is nearly 1 month old and before anymore days pass I want to write the story of his birth down. For all of you who are curious and also just so I have it down somewhere.
It is normal that during the entire pregnancy to have contractions, that is just what your body does to prepare for REAL labor. 2 weeks before his due date (due March 10, so this was Feb. 25) I started feeling stronger contractions, all day long there were moments when I would need to sit and take a break from whatever I was doing.I thought that I might be slowly starting labor.
I don't remember many braxton hicks or false labor with Charlotte, with her when I started feeling uncomfortable and unable to sleep the contractions progressively got stronger and harder to deal with, but that also took a full day before anything happened and she was born a full 24 hours later (4:20am). During that pregnancy I knew when I went into labor. This time around was VERY different! But because the first is what I had imprinted on my brain I thought that some if not most all of the labor and delivery would go pretty much the same way. BOY was I WRONG!
Okay, back to 2 weeks before the due date.... I had a friend over and we had been working on some crafty projects. She left around 4ish. Char's and I headed out to the diaper factory. While on our way home Gio called me and said he had tickets to a fashion show if I wanted to come to the center and Char's was welcome. I debated going since I had not been feeling at 100%, but then again I had never been to a fashion show. I raced home changed and we ran to the bus to meet Gio. After going out for drinks and appetizers we saw the quick fashion show and headed home(see all the fun we had). I told Gio later that I thought the baby was not going to wait the full 2 weeks!

Fast forward to Wednesday March 2. In the morning Char's and I ran a bunch of errands. Grocery shopping, stopping to buy some paint for a few projects, and on to the fabric store. I was just about done, we were looking at buttons when all of the sudden Char's saw someone coming in the door and took off running right under everyone's legs! I threw all of my stuff at the counter bumping into people as I try to dodge my way out to grab her! There was an older woman already 2 steps ahead of me (not too hard to out run a VERY PREGNANT woman)who got a hold of little Charlotte before I could, thank goodness, and handed her over to me. I was both embarrassed and frightened for what could have happened (the store is on a VERY, VERY busy street. The woman behind the counter was kind and pulled out a stool for me to sit on and catch my breath, I was sweating like a pig by now and someone else brought me a cup of water. The comment was made about having this episode start my labor. I laughed it off. Through out the rest of the day I felt fine. More of those contractions I had been having all week, but nothing unbearable.

The next morning I woke up around 8AM. Showered and changed the bed sheets, started a load of laundry and started feeling contractions a bit stronger, but told Gio to go to work. "If anything happens I will call you" I kept saying to him. "I am sure it will take all day for anything to really happen". I called my friend who was going to take Char's when we needed to go to the hospital, I told her that I was not sure when, but I was sure today was the day, she was already at work and just said to keep her posted. She could meet us at the hospital or come to our house.
About 20 minutes later I changed my mind about Gio leaving me and we called another friend to take Char's, I think we both realized we did not have much time.
I jumped back in the shower sitting on a stool working through contractions (maybe a bit in denial about how active my labor was) . Gio was gathering things around the house (my bag had been packed for a month ready to go), pillows, Char's bag, medical forms, ect... he kept telling me to get dressed so we could get out of the house. I was feeling the contractions REALLY strong now and could barley even find clothes to put on. We all loaded into the elevator and while on our way down I could smell Charlotte with a smelly diaper. I sent Gio out to get the car (as I could not imagine myself in full, active labor crossing the busy street we live on stopping every few min.s for a contraction)as I returned upstairs to get the wipes we forgot. (this was just about 10AM)
By the time I got down stairs I knew that getting to the hospital in time was going to be cutting it close, I was already feeling to push! Lito, our doorman was watching Char's while Gio ran to get the car, I think we scared him the most! While I was having another contraction and holding onto a door handle he kept saying "where is Giovanni"????
Into the car and down the street to drop Char's off, back on our way. contractions getting stronger and closer together, my water breaks in the car and traffic is ridiculous!I feel a little bit of relief, but start crying because Gio starts weaving into oncoming traffic as if we are in a movie, lights are out and there are policemen and women trying to direct traffic, Gio unrolls his window and in a mix of English and Italian yells that I am in active labor. We pull up to the hospital ER and leave the car with everything in it (maybe even the keys, who cared at this point). Gio finds a wheelchair and someone working at the hospital who gets me in front of the elevator that is supposed to take me up to labor and delivery on the 1st floor. While we waited for the LONGEST time for the elevator to arrive I kept having the pushing sensation, finally up to the right floor a nurse came out to see what is going on. She takes one look at me asks if this is my first baby and says she will be back after she is done doing whatever she is doing to check on me (I will never forget the look on her face, "i don't have time for you right now" look).

I got up from the wheelchair and made it into the lobby bathroom telling Gio that the baby was not waiting and he was coming NOW! He called for the nurse again and she came running out with two other nurses. They convinced me to sit back down in the wheelchair and wheeled me into a delivery room where more nurses and doctors came in. They moved me onto a delivery bed and with in minutes (at 10:30am)Isaac was born! What a rush! I was able to hold and cuddle him until Gio cut the cord and they took him for a bath and a few tests.
Gio of course had to go move the car and get my bag. I had some alone time with my new little boy. I looked at him with wonder, awe and much gratitude as I thought about the miracle of life. The little miracles that have occurred during the months that I carried him. Prayers that have been heard and comfort sent when it was needed. What honor it is to be a mother! To share in the creation of another little body and to have the privileged to help the spirits that dwell in those bodies to understand who they are and their full potential! What a glorious responsibility!

(Gio did not have much time to pull out the camera to get pictures, but here are a few shots of Isaac in the early hours of his life and meeting his big sister)!

Enjoying our boy

Just look at this tender face, we have been enjoying this little guy! He is so mild and sweet! A GREAT baby and a good brother!
My parents left us yesterday to travel up to Germany to visit with some friends before taking a plane back over the atlantic. We miss them a lot already! Look forward to seeing them soon in the future. In the meantime here on the home front I am learning how to keep up house, cook, be a mommy of 2 and a good wifey.... I know one of these days it will all come together! For now I am happy to just stare at this face and be amazed by the goodness of a loving Father in heaven and be thankful for miracles!
